Climate change impacts the company’s costs, revenues and reputation. It takes a very important role in defining our strategy.
The importance of this theme comes from the commitment to adapt to climate change and from potential financial advantages, more than an answer to legal and regulatory requirements.
CTT’s environmental impact is reflected in the air polluting emissions, mainly greenhouse effects gases (GEG). These emissions are mainly due to private and outsourced transports, liable for almost all of our carbon footprint (scopes 1, 2 and 3).
Since 2015, we buy 100% green electricity. This significantly reduced our annual scope 2 emissions. It also contributed to reduce the company’s global carbon footprint and to reach the targets regarding the reduction of carbon absolute and specific emissions.
Indirect emissions associated to the outsourced transport (scope 3) still represent most of the emissions. Direct emissions resulting from fuel and gas consumption (scope 1) come next, followed by the emissions coming from electricity and climatization (scope 2).
Globally, we are not considered an environmentally aggressive company, compared to other activity sectors. By comparing CTT’s carbon intensity with its impact in terms of value creation, we can state that our contribution to the national GDP was of around 2%. Far above our contribution to the global GEG nationally, which was of 0.3% (scopes 1 and 2).
Considering the direct (scope 1) and indirect (scope 2) carbon emissions in 2018, for each postal item delivered we emitted 14,2 g of CO2.

Regarding carbon and energy management, we adopted the principles established in our Energy, Carbon and Climate Changes Policy.
We subscribed and actively participated in several carbon management programs, both national and international. Our energy management strategy is based on the commitment that the increase in the average global temperature does not reach the 2 degrees Celsius, meeting the challenge set out by the Climate Convention.
SBTi – Science Based Targets
In 2017, SBTi approved our new carbon emissions targets. These targets are to ensure that the increase in the average global temperature does not reach the 2 degrees Celsius.
There are two targets approved. Between 2013 and 2015:
- to reduce 30% of total emissions
- to reduce 20% of emissions per letter/parcel
EMMS Program - Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System
This International Post Corporation (IPC) program assesses the performance of various postal operators as regards environmental impact.
In the scope of the carbon proficiency rating, we got the third best position among the 20 main international operators. The focus was on:
- the significant reduction of the carbon emissions resulting from our direct activity, since the beginning of this program
- our carbon management performance
We adopted as ours the sectors’ targets on the reduction of carbon intensity per each letter and parcel delivered established by IPC, according to the SBTi standards mentioned above. The target was of less 20% emissions (scopes 1, 2 and 3) until 2015.
CDP - Carbon Disclosure Project
In 2018, we confirmed our position (A-) at the CDP - Carbon Disclosure Project index on climate change. With postal and national performances above average, we got a 2nd position nationally and a 3rd position worldwide.
