CTT joins worldwide postal operators to celebrate the Green Postal Day

18 September, 2020

This Friday, September 18th, CTT joins other 14 worldwide postal operators to celebrate the Green Postal Day for the second year in a row. This day is the result of the positive outcomes of the worldwide postal operators’ team effort to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate changes.

To João Bento, CTT’s CEO, “Once again, it is with the greatest pleasure that CTT participates in the Green Postal Day, an immensely praised IPC initiative. At CTT, the Express and Parcels segment grew 35% in Portugal and 44% in Spain in the first half of 2020. We estimate the consumers to follow with this online trend. This behaviour impacted not only in our logistics chain, but also enhanced CTT’s long-time commitment (for over 10 years) in reducing the carbon footprint, along with the remaining IPC’s operators. We work to a common purpose, and in the challenging context that we are living we know that we need to do much more – together we can go further.”

The postal sector has its own environmental management program since 2008. Last year, 2019, worldwide postal operators presented the Sustainability Measurement and Management System (SMMS), a program focused not only on climate changes but also in other areas, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These areas are health, safety, learning and development, resources’ efficiency, air quality, circular economy and sustainable procurement.

Since 2008 that the postal operators who participated at the SMMS have reduced their absolute carbon emissions in 31%, overcoming the 20% goal established up to 2020; renewable electricity in our buildings was responsible for 31% of the total electricity used by CTT; and 47% of the waste was separated to recycle or to reuse. The sector’s electric vehicles represent around 15% of the postal operators’ fleet, 10% more in the last 3 years.

With this pandemics crisis, the e-commerce grew unprecedently, and as it grows postal operators have to go even further in the reduction of the deliveries’ carbon footprint. During the pandemics, we offered the Green Deliveries service (easy services) to corporate customers. This service ensures that all deliveries agreed are made by CTT’s electric vehicles. Worldwide postal operators have played a very important role during the Emergency Situation, delivering essential goods at home.

The Green Postal Day counts on the support and participation of the CEOs of the following postal operators: An Post, bpost, Correos, Deutsche Post DHL, Le Groupe La Poste, New Zealand Post, Österreichische Post, POST Luxembourg, Poste Italiane, Posti, PostNL, PostNord, Royal Mail, SwissPost and CTT – Correios de Portugal. At the Green Postal Day website www.ipc.be/greenpostalday it is possible to look for case studies on the postal operators’ efforts on these matters, as well as videos with the participants’ initiatives.
